A highly detailed contemporary sculptural composition inspired by the artistic traditions of the Dogon region of Mali.
The elongated canoe carries a group of stylised human figures, each individually modelled and arranged along the vessel. The richly textured hull, expressive figures and distinctive animal-head prow create a dynamic narrative composition that can be appreciated from multiple angles.
The sculpture was crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting process. Variations in the surface, casting and patina are characteristic of artisan-made metalwork and give each piece its individual character.
ORIGIN & ACQUISITION
Handcrafted in Mali and acquired locally during travel in West Africa.
Contemporary decorative object — not an antique or archaeological artefact.
MATERIAL
Cast copper alloy, commonly referred to in the art trade as “African bronze”. Produced using the lost-wax casting process, with a naturally varied brown, copper and greenish patina.
