Description

A striking contemporary zoomorphic sculpture inspired by the artistic traditions of the Dogon region of Mali.

The elongated four-legged animal form features a curled tail, richly engraved surface decoration and a small seated human figure rising from the top. The combination of human and animal imagery, together with the detailed geometric ornamentation, gives the piece a particularly sculptural and distinctive presence.

The figure was crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting process. Variations in the surface, casting and patina are characteristic of artisan-made metalwork and give each piece its individual character.

ORIGIN & ACQUISITION

Handcrafted in Mali and acquired locally during travel in West Africa.
Contemporary decorative object — not an antique or archaeological artefact.

MATERIAL

Cast copper alloy, commonly referred to in the art trade as “African bronze”. Produced using the lost-wax casting process, with a naturally varied brown, copper and greenish patina.
