Description
A striking hand-carved Dogon granary door from Mali, featuring a dense composition of elongated animal forms, smaller figurative details and geometric surface decoration.
The two-panel door is dominated by a pair of tall, vertically carved crocodiles running through the centre, surrounded by smaller stylised figures and repeated carved patterns. The strong symmetry and deeply textured surface give the piece an architectural, almost sculptural presence.
The surface shows natural variations in carving, grain, wear and patina that reflect its handmade character and give the door its individual appearance.
ORIGIN & ACQUISITION
Handcrafted in Mali and acquired locally during travel in West Africa.
Contemporary decorative object — not an antique or archaeological artefact.
MATERIAL
Hand-carved solid wood with a naturally varied brown patina and visible tool marks from the carving process. Wood species has not been independently identified.
