Description
A distinctive contemporary lidded vessel inspired by the artistic traditions of the Dogon region of Mali.
The rounded body is richly decorated with geometric, spiral and linear motifs, while the removable lid is crowned by an elongated horse figure. The contrast between the compact vessel and the sculptural animal finial gives the piece a particularly expressive and architectural character.
The object was crafted using the traditional lost-wax casting process. Variations in the surface, casting and patina are characteristic of artisan-made metalwork and give each piece its individual character.
ORIGIN & ACQUISITION
Handcrafted in Mali and acquired locally during travel in West Africa.
Contemporary decorative object — not an antique or archaeological artefact.
MATERIAL
Cast copper alloy, commonly referred to in the art trade as “African bronze”. Produced using the lost-wax casting process, with a naturally varied brown, copper and greenish patina.
